As the United States moves forward with proposed tariffs on Canadian goods, the City of Brampton is stepping up efforts to protect local businesses and jobs. In a decisive move, City Council has passed a motion advocating for reciprocal measures and has launched the Mayor’s Tariff Task Force to help businesses navigate the shifting trade landscape.

“With looming tariff threats on Canadian goods, Brampton is taking action to protect local businesses and our economy,” said Mayor Patrick Brown. “We stand with our provincial partners and federal government in calling for reciprocal measures and are committed to keeping our industries competitive. The Mayor’s Tariff Task Force will strategically reduce our reliance on U.S. markets by strengthening global partnerships and expanding interprovincial trade. By working directly with businesses and fostering new market opportunities, we will help keep Brampton’s economy resilient and strong.”

A Proactive Approach to Trade Challenges

Recognizing the potential economic fallout from U.S. tariffs, Brampton’s new task force will focus on three key areas:

  • City-to-city engagement: Strengthening relationships with U.S. municipalities and businesses that share an interest in maintaining stable trade relations.

  • Business outreach: Connecting directly with U.S. companies operating in Brampton while identifying new opportunities for local businesses.

  • Diversifying trade relationships: Expanding global partnerships and pushing for fewer barriers to interprovincial trade to reduce dependence on the American market.

In addition to local initiatives, the City is urging the federal government to provide emergency financial assistance to help Canadian businesses offset increased shipping costs and access new markets. The proposed relief package would offer crucial support to companies struggling with trade disruptions.

“These tariffs pose a threat to Brampton’s advanced manufacturing sector, supply chain, and overall economic stability,” said Regional Councillor Gurpartap Singh Toor, Chair of Economic Development. “We are taking proactive steps to equip businesses with the resources and support needed to navigate these challenges. By working closely with federal and provincial partners, we will push for measures that protect local jobs and keep our economy moving forward.”

Brampton’s call for action comes as Canada prepares to respond to sweeping U.S. tariffs that could see some Canadian goods subjected to taxes of 50% or more. The City is backing reciprocal trade measures at the national level and urging swift action from both federal and provincial governments to safeguard businesses and workers.

“Today’s motion demonstrates that Brampton is taking strong and strategic action in response to the threat of U.S. tariffs,” said Regional Councillor Rowena Santos, Vice-Chair of Economic Development. “As we work to diversify our trade relationships and reduce reliance on U.S. markets, we’re committed to ensuring our businesses have the support they need to thrive globally. Together, we will continue to foster resilient, sustainable economic growth for Brampton and Canada.”
