Canada is closely monitoring situation in Punjab

In response to a question from Indo-Canadian MP Iqwinder S Gaheer in the House of Commons on Thursday, Foreign Minister Melanie Joly stated that Canada is “very closely” monitoring the situation in Punjab and will continue to address the concerns of the community. The comments come amidst the crackdown by Punjab Police on Amritpal Singh.

Gaheer had asked Joly to update the House about the ongoing mass suspension of internet services in Punjab. Joly replied that the Canadian government is aware of the evolving situation and hopes for a return to stability in the region. She added that Canadians can always count on the government of Canada to make sure that they will continue to address the concerns of many members of the community.

Meanwhile, India’s External Affairs Ministry spokesman Arindam Bagchi urged people residing abroad not to believe “inaccurate and motivated narratives” that are being circulated by some elements on social media regarding the action against Amritpal Singh. He stated that the authorities in Punjab are undertaking operations to nab a fugitive, and relevant information is being regularly shared.
