China accuses Canada of ‘sensationalizing’ alleged secret police stations

Beijing on Friday accused Ottawa of “sensationalizing” the issue of alleged Chinese secret police stations in Canada in order to smear the reputation of China.

At a daily briefing on Friday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated that Canada should “stop sensationalizing and hyping the matter and stop attacks and smears on China”, adding that China has been “strictly abiding by international law and respecting all countries’ judicial sovereignty.”

Mao, however, did not speak on the existence of the aforementioned alleged police stations or their affiliation with the Chinese government.

Just a day before, on Thursday, Sgt. Charles Poirier of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police stated that many Canadians of Chinese origin had been subject to activities by the alleged police stations, adding that Canada would not tolerate any intimidation, harassment or targeting of diaspora communities.

It may be pertinent to note that a probe has been launched by the RCMP’s Integrated National Security Team into the alleged police stations in Quebec, according to media reports.
