City of Brampton Welcomes Ontario’s Game-Changing Rapid Transit Tunnel Expansion
Hazel McCallion Line extension to bring underground rapid transit to Brampton’s downtown core
The City of Brampton is set to transform its downtown core following the Ontario government’s announcement to extend the Hazel McCallion Line with a state-of-the-art rapid transit tunnel. This groundbreaking four-kilometre underground extension will connect the Brampton Gateway Terminal to the heart of the city, enhancing urban connectivity, reducing congestion, and driving economic growth.
The project aligns seamlessly with Brampton’s vision for a vibrant and accessible downtown, ensuring integration with Brampton Transit, Züm, GO Transit, and other regional transit systems. By introducing clean, electrically powered light rail vehicles, the extension also advances environmental sustainability.
The Hazel McCallion Line extension is poised to spark unprecedented economic growth. Over its lifespan, the project is projected to create 47,000 new housing units and generate 17,000 jobs, breathing new life into Brampton’s downtown. Mayor Patrick Brown emphasized the significance of this venture, calling it “the largest undertaking in the city’s history.”
“This investment is a game-changer,” Brown stated. “It will fundamentally enhance connectivity, reduce congestion, and improve the quality of life for Bramptonians while driving urban renewal and economic vitality.”
The tunnel extension, identified as a priority under Ontario’s Building Transit Faster Act in 2024, is part of the province’s $70 billion commitment to modernize public transit over the next decade. Key benefits of the project include:
-
Enhanced Connectivity: Seamless links between Brampton and major transit systems across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA).
-
Reduced Congestion: Increased transit use is expected to ease traffic on the city’s busiest roads.
-
Environmental Impact: Electrically powered light rail vehicles will reduce emissions, supporting Ontario’s clean transportation goals.
-
Economic Growth: The new infrastructure will attract businesses, residents, and investments to Brampton’s downtown core.
