Federal Judge Upholds Deportation Order Against Jaskirat Sidhu in Humboldt Broncos Bus Crash

A bid to prevent the deportation of the semi-truck driver, Jaskirat Singh Sidhu, responsible for the Humboldt Broncos bus tragedy in 2018 has been dismissed by a federal judge.

Sidhu received an eight-year sentence in 2019 after pleading guilty to dangerous driving causing death and bodily harm in the Saskatchewan crash that resulted in the death of 16 people and injuries to 13 others.

In a federal court ruling issued on Thursday, the judge rejected Sidhu’s plea to overturn a Canada Border Services Agency decision from March 2022 calling for his deportation. Sidhu, a permanent resident, is eligible for deportation under federal law in the case of a serious criminal offense. He was granted parole earlier this year.

Toby Boulet, who lost his son Logan in the crash, expressed his desire to see Sidhu deported, stating, “We don’t want him to sit in jail for 75 years. I don’t think that’s fair. Our son passed, 15 others passed, 13 lives have been destroyed for the rest of their life. Their loved ones, their friends, the billets … they’re all just destroyed.”

“We just want him to go away. We think that will make our lives better as we move forward.”

Although Sidhu will still face an Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada (IRB) hearing for a final decision on deportation, Chief Justice Paul Crampton emphasized that Sidhu retains the option of applying for permanent residence on humanitarian and compassionate grounds.
