Gas Prices in GTA to Drop by Nearly 20 Cents as Federal Carbon Tax Ends

Gas prices across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) are set to plummet overnight as the federal government officially scraps the consumer carbon tax on April 1. The move, announced by Prime Minister Mark Carney earlier this month, is expected to provide immediate relief to motorists at the pumps.

According to GasWizard.ca, operated by industry expert Dan McTeague, prices in the GTA are forecasted to drop by approximately 20 cents per litre. The current average price of $1.57 per litre is expected to fall to around $1.37 by midnight.

McTeague explained that the existing carbon tax levy on gasoline, which stands at 17.61 cents per litre, will no longer be applied. As a result, drivers in Ontario can expect to see nearly 20 cents slashed from fuel costs.

“It’s a pause in carbon taxes, not just for gasoline, but also for diesel and anything we use, like aviation fuel, propane, natural gas,” McTeague told CTV News Toronto. “All these prices will come down effective midnight tonight, and that should be reflected at the pumps.”

The carbon tax removal is part of the federal government’s broader effort to ease cost-of-living pressures, though critics argue it may undermine Canada’s climate goals. The price reduction will offer short-term financial relief to consumers, particularly as fuel costs have remained high in recent months.
