An individual identified as Brijesh Mishra, an Indian education agent, has been apprehended in Canada and is now confronting criminal charges in relation to a counterfeit Canadian college admission letter scandal. The Toronto Star reports that Mishra was charged on Friday by the Canada Border Services Agency for engaging in unlicensed immigration advice and counseling a person to deceive authorities by either directly or indirectly misrepresenting or withholding information.

According to Canadian law, only licensed lawyers and consultants registered with the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants are authorized to provide immigration advice and services for a fee. However, there is no evidence on the websites of the Law Society of Ontario or the consultants’ college to suggest that Mishra was a member of either organization. It is worth noting that education agents are not subject to regulation in Canada.

Mishra’s arrest occurred during an attempt to enter Canada, where border agents deemed him inadmissible. He was detained until Friday when he was formally charged for his alleged involvement in the issuance of fraudulent acceptance letters to Canadian higher education institutions on behalf of prospective Indian students.

These charges against Mishra come in the aftermath of an international education scandal that has garnered significant attention in both Canada and India. Several international students were flagged for potential deportation after reportedly utilizing doctored admission letters to secure study permits.
