Indian-origin transport truck driver Aman Kumar survived an accident on Highway 401 when a suspected stolen vehicle swerved in front of his truck amid icy conditions. Kumar said he feels “lucky to be alive” as he walked away without injury from the incident that was captured by his dashcam.

Kumar has been driving transport trucks for five years and next in his life did he experience something like this. Last week, while on his way from Toronto to Kingston, a suspected stolen SUV swerved across several lanes on Highway 401 and got hit by Kumar’s truck. The footage from Kumar’s dashcam shows a grey SUV in the left-most lane of the highway lose control and veer across several lanes of traffic, even crossing the lane in which Kumar was. It seems as if Kumar will be able to avoid hitting the SUV but the driver in the SUV drives the car in reverse, coming back in front of Kumar’s truck, causing him to hit the car at 67 kmph.

“He was out of my way. But in the last second, I don’t know why, he started reversing. I feel really, really lucky to be alive actually. I have like five years of (transport truck) driving experience. I’ve never seen anything like this,” Kumar told the media.

Talking about the incident, Kumar shared he reacted the moment he saw the SUV swerve towards him and managed to brake and bring his speed down by about 30 kmph. However, he explained, “If I would have hit a bit more brake the truck would have jackknifed and many other cars would have been under the trailer. So I had no option. It would have been catastrophic.”

Ontario Provincial Police said that the driver of the SUV fled the scene on foot following the collision.
