LCBO to Phase Out Paper Bags at All Locations in Sustainability Push

The Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) has recently made an announcement regarding the phasing out of paper bags at all of its locations in the coming months. This initiative comes as part of the LCBO’s sustainability commitment to minimize its impact on the environment. The corporation is now encouraging its customers to bring their own reusable bags or buy one in-store, and also offering the option of re-used cardboard boxes and eight-pack carriers at no cost.

It is worth noting that the LCBO has already phased out plastic bags from its stores 15 years ago, ahead of Canada’s ban on single-use plastics that was implemented in December 2021. The president and CEO of LCBO, George Soleas, said in a statement that the corporation is committed to taking these important steps towards minimizing its impact on the environment. The removal of single-use paper bags will help remove almost 135 million paper bags from its stores on an annual basis, diverting 2,665 tonnes of waste from landfills, and saving the equivalent of more than 188,000 trees every year.

However, LCBO did not disclose specific details on the date paper bags will be phased out. In any case, this move is a significant step towards a more sustainable future, and it is hoped that other companies will follow suit and take proactive measures to reduce their impact on the environment.
