Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU), a civilian law enforcement agency, independent of the police is investigating a fatal hit-and-run case that happened early Wednesday morning in Mississauga.

Emergency crews were called to the area of Airport Road between Thamesgate Drive and Slough Street just after 4.30 a.m., where a female cyclist was struck and killed by a vehicle, the Peel Regional Police said.

The vehicle involved, which is suspected to be a blue Mazda sedan, was located a few kilometres away from the scene.

Police believe the driver fled in their car eastbound on Thamesgate, collided into a power box at a property before making it to Derry and Goreway where the vehicle was abandoned. The driver is still outstanding.

In a post on the platform X, Peel Police confirmed the Special Investigations Unit has invoked their mandate. Currently, Airport Road is closed in both directions at Thamesgate for the investigation and drivers are being asked to take alternative routes.
