PM Trudeau Seeks to Renew Canada-India Talks on Security and Law Post Modi’s Re-Election
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is optimistic about renewing discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, following Modi’s re-election for a third term. Trudeau emphasized the importance of addressing “serious issues around national security and keeping Canadians safe and the rule of law” — matters that have previously strained Canada-India relations.
During an interview with CBC News, PM Trudeau expressed his aspirations. “There’s alignment on a number of big issues that we need to work on as, as democracies as a global community,” he stated. He further elaborated, “But now that he (Modi) is through his election, I think there is an opportunity for us to engage, including on some very serious issues around national security and keeping Canadians safe and the rule of law that we will be engaging.”
Relations between the two nations deteriorated last year following PM Trudeau’s accusations regarding the “potential” involvement of Indian government agents in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen. India dismissed these claims as “absurd” and “motivated,” and voiced concerns over Canada becoming a hub for the separatist movement, which Canada has yet to officially recognize.
Trudeau’s recent comments were made after Modi shared a photo of their meeting on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Italy. Notably, unlike his posts with other leaders such as German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Modi’s tweet about his meeting with Trudeau included only a brief caption.
