In a bold daylight carjacking caught on camera, York Regional Police (YRP) are seeking the public’s help to identify a suspect who targeted a victim pumping gas in Newmarket, Ontario. The incident occurred on Saturday, August 3, around 6:30 p.m. at a gas station near Mulock Drive East and Harry Walker Parkway.

The suspect has been identified as 39-year-old Giani Zail Singh Sidhu, described as a male of no fixed address, standing five-foot-eight, with a thin build, black medium-length hair, and a black beard. He is wanted on multiple charges, including robbery, dangerous operation of a vehicle, failure to stop after an accident, possession of stolen property over $5,000, and failure to comply with an undertaking.

The surveillance footage, released by police on Tuesday, shows the victim refueling their vehicle when the suspect suddenly approaches and attempts to take control by opening the driver-side door. A brief struggle ensues, interrupted by a good Samaritan who drives up and blocks the suspect’s path with his own vehicle. Despite the effort, the suspect managed to reverse the car, causing damage to the driver-side door and dislodging the gas pump hose before fleeing the scene. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

According to police, the suspect had “just” been released following a bail hearing on unrelated charges shortly before the carjacking took place. Later that evening, around 9 p.m., Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a hit-and-run incident involving the same stolen vehicle at Mayfield and Bramalea roads in Caledon. The suspect escaped on foot before police could apprehend him.

“Despite the use of a drone and their Canine Unit, police were unable to locate the suspect,” said a YRP spokesperson.

“Investigators are appealing for any witnesses to come forward,” the police statement added. “Officers would also like to speak with anyone who may have video surveillance or dashcam footage in the area at the time of the incident.”

At the time of the carjacking, Sidhu was reportedly wearing a powder-blue short-sleeve polo shirt, black athletic pants, navy blue slip-on shoes issued by the prison, and a white or tan bucket hat.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact the YRP Hold-Up Unit at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 6630, or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
