Police Watchdog Investigates Officer-Involved Shooting in Etobicoke: Suspect Wounded, Toronto Police Dog Killed

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU), responsible for overseeing police conduct, is currently investigating a shooting incident involving an officer in Etobicoke on Tuesday night. The incident resulted in a wounded suspect and the tragic death of a Toronto police service dog.

At approximately 8 p.m., officers were dispatched to Dixon Road and Kipling Avenue after receiving reports of an armed suspect in the area. Upon arrival, the officers did not find any shooting victims, but they did confirm that a firearm had been discharged during the incident.

While conducting their search for the armed individual, an altercation ensued between the suspect and the police, resulting in the shooting and subsequent death of a police service dog. The suspect, identified as a 44-year-old man by the SIU, was also shot by the police during the encounter. He was immediately taken to a hospital for medical treatment, and his current condition remains unknown.

As per standard protocol, the SIU, the independent oversight body, was called in to investigate the incident. The SIU is tasked with examining cases involving police interactions that lead to death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.

Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw expressed his condolences for the loss of the police dog, named Bingo, on social media. In a heartfelt post, Chief Demkiw extended his sympathy to the canine’s partner and all the members of the Toronto Police K9 Unit for their dedication and service.

The investigation into the officer-involved shooting will be diligently carried out by the SIU to provide transparency and ensure accountability in this unfortunate incident.
