Chandigarh: A day after Punjab Police claimed they had arrested the main conspirator in the Bargari sacrilege case of 2015 at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in Bengaluru, the force said Wednesday he is not Sirsa-based Dera Sacha Sauda national committee member Sandeep Bareta. According to the police, Sandeep Bareta is involved in all three main incidents of sacrilege in 2015 in Faridkot’s Bargari as well as in other cases and has been on the run for the last seven years. A court had declared him a fugitive along with two other committee members, Harsh Dhuri and Pradeep Klair.
On Wednesday, the Faridkot police tweeted, “Communication from Immigration Authorities, #Bengaluru Airport was received regarding detaining of Sandeep s/o Om Prakash r/o New Delhi) matching the description of Sacrilege accused Sandeep Bareta on the basis of LOC issued by Faridkot Police in Bargari Sacrilege Cases. The matter was promptly duly verified. It has been found that the detained person at Bengaluru Airport is not the wanted Sacrilege accused Sandeep Bareta r/o Sirsa, #Haryana”.
Punjab police had on Tuesday posted on Facebook that Sandeep Bareta had been arrested at the Bengaluru airport. “…in pursuance of lookout Notice issued by Punjab Police Police party sent for getting the accused for his production before Learned Court and seeking police remand for custodial interrogation.”
The incidents of sacrilege took place in Faridkot in 2015 and had involved the theft of a “bir” or copy of the Guru Granth Sahib, putting up handwritten sacrilegious posters, and torn pages of the Sikh holy book found scattered at Bargari.
