Shifting Immigration Policies in Canada: A New Reality for Students, Workers, and Aspiring Immigrants
The shifts, which include potential alterations to Permanent Resident (PR) numbers and stricter rules on work permits, have created a ripple effect across communities relying on Canada for opportunities and stability.
Canada has long been a beacon of hope for international students, temporary foreign workers, and aspiring immigrants. However, recent changes in immigration policies have sparked concerns and left many in limbo. The shifts, which include potential alterations to Permanent Resident (PR) numbers and stricter rules on work permits, have created a ripple effect across communities relying on Canada for opportunities and stability.
In August 2024, Canada’s Immigration Minister floated the idea of revisiting the country’s Permanent Resident (PR) targets. This development comes as the government seeks to balance its commitment to immigration with concerns about housing affordability, economic sustainability, and social cohesion. These considerations, while crucial, have left many immigrants and those aspiring to settle in Canada feeling uncertain about their future.
Jatin Thakur, a temporary foreign worker from India, shares his concerns, “We’ve always viewed Canada as a place where hard work pays off. The possibility of reduced PR slots makes us wonder if the dream of permanent residency is slipping away.”
This sentiment is echoed across the board, particularly among international students. For years, Canada has been a preferred destination for students from around the globe, especially from countries like India. However, recent changes have made this journey more challenging. The Canadian government’s decision to stop allowing visitors to apply for work permits from within the country has added a new layer of complexity for those already in Canada on temporary visas.
A man who spoke to Parvasi Media Group on condition of anonymity shared how this sudden change has derailed his plans. “I came to Canada on a visitor visa with the intention of applying for a work permit from within the country. I even brought my family with me, expecting that things would work out. Now, I’m stuck without a job, and I don’t know what to do next. It’s put us in a very difficult situation.”
Adding to the anxiety is the plight of Indian students who face deportation after a sudden policy shift. In June 2024, many students discovered that their study permits were issued based on fraudulent documentation, unbeknownst to them. This has left hundreds at risk of deportation, despite their innocence in the matter.
Mandeep Dhillon, who is set to join her college in the September intake, voices the collective anxiety of new students, “It’s heartbreaking. We’ve worked so hard to get here, and now there’s this cloud hanging over us. We just want clarity and fairness.”
