Three Brampton residents are facing charges after an unusual theft of butter worth $1,000 in Guelph potentially derailed their holiday baking plans.

While butter prices are on the rise, reaching as high as $12 per pound in some stores, the consequences for these culprits are likely to be even more costly.

According to a press release from Guelph Police on December 28, the three Brampton men may see their “holiday baking plans interrupted.”

The incident unfolded just before 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve when law enforcement responded to a call at a grocery store in the south end of Guelph.

Police reported two men placing a case of butter into a cart and exiting the store, heading towards a waiting vehicle.

Upon intervention, officers discovered the suspect vehicle outside another nearby grocery store, with two men inside and a third exiting the store to approach the officers.

A witness informed the police that the third man had abandoned a cart just outside the store, prompting officers to inspect it.

Upon examination, the cart yielded additional stolen butter.

In total, officers recovered 144 sticks of butter and 17 containers of ghee butter, estimating the value at over $1,000.

The three Brampton men, aged 40, 29, and 25, were arrested and charged with theft under $5,000, as per police statements.

Furthermore, one of the men allegedly provided a false name, resulting in an additional charge of obstructing police.

All three individuals have been released, with court dates pending.
