As of Monday, Toronto commuters will be required to pay more for using public transit as the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) fares increase by 10 cents for pay-as-you-go PRESTO card users, as well as commuters who pay with cash, for both adults and children. However, seniors, Fair Pass Transit Discount Program users, and monthly pass customers will not be affected by this fare hike.

The TTC has explained that this fare increase is a crucial step towards making public transit more reliable, safe, and accessible in Toronto. The fare hike was initially included in the City of Toronto’s latest budget, which allocated a $958.7-million subsidy to the transit agency. However, the timing of the fare increase is significant, as it comes amidst rising violence on the public transit system in Toronto. This was evidenced by a tragic incident just over a week ago, when a teenager was stabbed and killed while sitting on a bench at Keele Station.

The fare for an adult PRESTO ticket will be $3.35 for a single ride, $6.70 for a round trip, and $13.50 for a day pass.
