Trump Praises ‘Extremely Productive’ Call With Carney
U.S. President Donald Trump revealed he had a “highly productive” conversation with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, signaling a potential thaw in recent trade tensions. The call, which took place Friday morning, comes amid heightened trade disputes as both countries brace for a wave of reciprocal tariffs set to take effect on April 2, dubbed “Liberation Day” by Trump.
Taking to his Truth Social platform, Trump described the call as “extremely productive,” highlighting shared interests in politics, business, and future cooperation.
“We agree on many things, and will be meeting immediately after Canada’s upcoming Election to work on elements of Politics, Business, and all other factors, that will end up being great for both the United States of America and Canada,” Trump wrote.

He concluded the post by thanking followers for their “attention to this matter,” adding to speculation that the two leaders may be laying the groundwork for significant post-election policy discussions.
The call followed an earlier announcement by Carney, who revealed during a campaign stop that Trump had requested the conversation. The prime minister, currently navigating a heated federal election campaign, struck a more cautious tone, warning that Canada is prepared to retaliate if the U.S. refuses to ease its aggressive trade stance.
While Carney did not offer specific details on potential countermeasures, he confirmed that any Canadian response would be measured and delayed, allowing time to assess the impact of the U.S.-imposed tariffs.
“The retaliations will not come right away,” Carney said, signaling a wait-and-see approach ahead of the April 2 tariff rollout.
