A heartbreaking incident occurred on Wednesday morning when two women from Punjab were shot by a man of Indian origin in Carteret, New Jersey. The tragic event left one woman dead and the other critically injured, casting a shadow of grief over both communities in the United States and India.

“Deeply saddened to learn of the tragic demise of Ms. Jasvir Kaur and injuries to Ms. Gagandeep Kaur in a shooting on Roosevelt Av, Carteret, New Jersey. We offer our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased,” The Consulate General of India in New York expressed in a heartfelt post on X on June 14.

The victims, Jasvir Kaur and Gagandeep Kaur, both originally from Punjab, were targeted outside a home in Carteret. Harinder Singh, a US-based Punjabi from Nakodar, revealed to The Indian Express that the alleged shooter, Gill, is from Hussainiwala village in Nakodar. The deceased, Jasvir Kaur, aged 29, was married, while her cousin Gagandeep Kaur, aged 20, was known to the accused.

In the wake of the shooting, both women were swiftly airlifted to nearby hospitals. Tragically, Jasvir Kaur succumbed to her injuries, leaving her family and friends in deep mourning. Gagandeep Kaur remains in critical condition, fighting for her life as authorities continue to investigate the incident.

The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and authorities have yet to determine any specific connection between Gill and the victims beyond their acquaintance. This senseless act of violence has left the community in shock and searching for answers.
