U.S. Postal Service Halts Mail to Canada Amid Canada Post Strike
A spokesperson for USPS indicated the suspension will remain in place until Canada Post restores normal operations.
The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) has temporarily suspended mail deliveries to Canada due to the ongoing strike by Canada Post workers. This unprecedented move affects all items addressed to Canada, with USPS urging customers to hold off on mailing packages or letters until further notice.
The decision follows a labor dispute that has seen approximately 55,000 workers represented by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) engage in rotating strikes for over two weeks. These job actions have disrupted mail and parcel deliveries nationwide, raising concerns as the busy holiday season approaches.
In an effort to resolve the impasse, Canada Post has proposed a framework aimed at fostering agreements with CUPW. The proposed plan reportedly includes measures to introduce greater flexibility to its delivery operations and addresses several key points raised by the union.
“Canada Post has shown significant movement on critical issues and remains committed to finding a negotiated solution,” the organization stated in a recent release.
The CUPW, however, has yet to finalize its stance. Union representatives are currently reviewing the offer to determine if it aligns with their demands for improved working conditions, pay equity, and better health and safety measures for employees.
