The city’s budget head has confirmed that John Tory would continue to serve as mayor for the budget meeting on Wednesday, despite having just announced his resignation due to a connection with a former staff member.

On Friday, Tory announced his resignation, calling his relationship with a former employee in his office a “severe lapse of judgement” that put the city’s top position at risk of being “tarnished.”

Tory is “committed” to remaining on to complete the budget process, according to budget manager Gary Crawford, who made the statement on Monday. Council members are scheduled to start debating the 2023 version on Wednesday.

Crawford said, “This is an incredibly important budget for the City of Toronto after a challenging time, and we need his leadership,” He further added, “He has been a strong leader for this budget, a strong leader for this city. He needs to continue doing that. I do not want to play politics with this budget, it’s too important.”

Some council members supported Tory staying in the mayor’s office until the budget was approved earlier in the day on Monday.
